3. Volunteer/Judge Registration
Odyssey wants your tournaments to be successful. It takes many volunteers to do this. Your tournament directors are depending on you to get this information to them. They are working very hard organizing and planning your tournament. It takes time to contact everyone’s tournament judge and worker in order to coordinate a successful and fun tournament. Remember your tournament director is a volunteer too!
If you do not provide a tournament judge and/or tournament worker, you will be billed $50 for each not provided. This late fee will need to be paid in order for you team(s) to be scored on tournament day.
A tournament judge must attend judges training. A replacement judge must be provided in the event that your initial person is unable to attend. training and competition.
Tournament workers will also need to provide a replacement in the event that they do not attend on tournament day.
All registrations will have a late fee when not meeting the January 11th, 2008 deadline.
Absolute last day to register with the late fee is January 25th, 2008.
Important Information: Odyssey coordinators/team coaches
1. The Arizona Odyssey of the Mind Board will assess fees for late membership(s) and a fee(s) for not providing a judge and a volunteer. *All membership late fee(s) and the no judge and volunteer fee(s) will need to be paid in order for your team(s) to be scored at the competition. All purchase orders will need to have been received and a billing issued prior to your tournament day. Confirmation of payment will be by email. All payments and billings will be forwarded to your tournament director. Purchase order payment often takes time, be patient.
2. Please be prepared to provide your official Odyssey of the Mind Membership Card when you register your team on tournament day. This would have been in the packet you received from International. It would also be a good idea to bring a copy of your confirmation of payments.
We thank you for being so timely and helpful during this membership process. Early membership information has helped your Regional Tournament Director:
* schedule all teams for the tournament, especially those teams with special needs and to accommodate judges and volunteers request.
*contact potential judges and volunteers in a timely manner, providing them with dates and times for training and the competition(s).
Your timeliness has also provided Arizona Odyssey of the Mind Association to receive enough capital to purchase trophies, ribbons, certificates, t-shirts, pins, concession items, and other tournament needs.
Judging Descriptions
*Head Judges
Head Judges must know the rules of the problem thoroughly. They must be able
to communicate well with the coaches and team members, and with the members
of the judging team. They must remain calm and be good problem-solvers. Head
Judges work closely with the Problem Captain to make sure things are consistent
from venue to venue for their problem.
*Staging Area Judges
Staging Area Judges must first and foremost be friendly people who can put the
kids and coaches at ease. They must be familiar with all the paperwork required
for the problem, and they must know about any required items that must be checked
in the Staging Area. Staging Area Judges should be familiar with the competition
venue and the problem in general so they can answer any questions the team may
have in the Staging Area. However, they may ask one of the other judges if they
do not have the answer to a particular question. The Staging Area Checklist,
provided by Creative Competitions Inc, (CCI), gives the Staging Area Judges
a way to ensure they do not overlook anything. Although Staging Area Judges
need not be as familiar with the problem as the Problem Judges, switching them
on competition day would be difficult. However, after the judges training has
been held, but before competition day, a Staging Area Judge could be switched.
The Problem Captain would have to review the specific Staging Area duties of
the problem.
*Problem Judges
Problem Judges must be completely familiar with the rules of the problem. They
have to be comfortable scoring either subjective (opinion) or objective (either
something was or wasn't done, or did or did not work, and so on) categories.
Switching these judges is not recommended unless they have the opportunity to
thoroughly review the problem they are to judge.
*Style Judges
The Style Judges need to know the overall idea of the problem and the specific
items scored. They must determine if the "Free choice of team" categories selected
for Style are not scored in the long-term problem, and if the Style is appropriate
to the problem solution. Style judges must be comfortable with subjective scoring,
since this is the only way to score Style categories. With a brief overview
from the Problem Captain or Head Judge, these folks can be switched from problem
to problem on competition day.
*Timekeepers
Timekeepers only need to know what is expected of them and whether time is to
be called after the 8 minute competition period ends or whether the team should
be allowed to continue but assessed a penalty for going overtime. These folks
can easily be switched from problem to problem on competition day. As an added
note, most judging teams are assigned a scorekeeper who is responsible for knowing
how their problem is scored and how the score sheet is set up. They are in charge
of compiling the judge's scores and entering them on the master score sheet.
