Being a Buddy Team at World Finals

Being a Buddy Team really adds a fun element to your World Finals experience. Don't be afraid to apply if it's your first time at World Finals--the benefits are some wonderful experiences for your team.

International teams are paired with an American team during the tournament. If possible, you try to see each other's long term performances, and cheer each other on! You also try to do a few "fun" things together--like having meals together, going swimming together, going on field trips together, etc. It isn't necessary to even speak each other's language--kids communicate in many ways.

If you are chosen to be a Buddy Team, it's nice to bring a few small things for your Buddy Team. They would love an Odyssey pin from you. Things from Arizona are fun, too--like pencils, bandanas, hats, etc. We usually brought our Buddy Team a small (2' X 3') Arizona flag, and a small book about Arizona for their school library.

Many Arizona teams have been Buddy Teams in the past. They have been paired with teams from Australia, Canada, the Virgin Islands, Japan, Luxembourg, Singapore, Colombia, Germany, etc. All of them said that it was one of the most rewarding experiences of going to World Finals.

If you want to apply, the application form is in your World Finals packet. Apply early!
